It is not there in Inkscape :-)
So if you are in windows:
Start > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map > select a font with greek letters in it.
Select the symbol (any) you want to copy. Then paste it directly into Inkscape You can adjust the fonts there in Inkscape.
It's easy and simple.

I disagree with the moderator. It IS there and easy, but it is not well documented.
I use Inkscape 0.48 in Ubuntu Linux, but this solution should be platform independent.
Inkscape supports "Unicode" a vastly extended character set that includes Greek Letters
(Hebrew letters, Japanese, Chinese, Hindi ... everything really).
Once you have selected the Font tool (clicked on the letter) hit Ctrl-U. The status line
will say "Unicode mode". Enter the 4 digit Unicode for the character you want and hit enter.
Hit "Esc" to get out of Unicode mode. For example, the first 5 greek letters alpha, beta, gamma,
delta and epsilon are unicode 03b0, 03b1 ... 03b5. the Greek letter Theta is 03b8 and the Greek letter Pi is 03c0.
What threw me at first is that, whlle my system had a "symbol" font, the "symbols" did not show up in the window when I clicked that font (just normal letters). In fact, using Unicode, you probably do not have to change from your
default font. Most unicode fonts, (Arial, Times, etc) include the Greek and other symbols if you use the
extended Unicode character set (which is what I have just demonstrated how to do).
And to "Magda", "Agnes" and "Moosefan" -- piss off!!! spammers!!
